We wrote a musical!
Doubleclicks Records have released the Original Cast Recording of Teaching a Robot to Love, a new musical by Laser Malena-Webber, E. Aaron Wilson, and Aubrey Turner. The album was released November 19 on all digital platforms and is available on CD at thedoubleclicks.com/shop.
With a pop, rock, and dubstep musical score, the new grassroots musical is a modern queer Frankenstein story about a group of friends who create a sentient Siri-like sales robot and learn lessons about change and the nature of humanity.
“This story is fun and full of sci-fi and robots, but it also tells a story from the inside of my heart as a trans non-binary person,” said Malena-Webber, who wrote the book and lyrics for the musical. “I am so excited for people to hear this emotional and joyful story about a great queer group of friends dealing with anxiety and the challenges of being a person.”
The recording features the vocal talents of Aliza Pearl, Amy Dallen, Bonnie Gordon, Xander Jeanneret, Zach Reino, and Morgan Peters. The album was originally funded by a Kickstarter campaign thanks to fans of the Doubleclicks, the pop band of Malena-Webber and Turner. The new musical was written and workshopped online during 2020-2021 and the album was produced and recorded in Portland and Los Angeles.
“We’re incredibly thankful to the fans who made it possible for us to write the musical and record this album, and I’m really looking forward to telling this story visually,” said Malena-Webber. The team is currently releasing weekly music videos for the musical to illustrate each of the songs, and has said they are open to staging or filming the musical when it is safe and practical to do so, but for right now are hoping the album will help the project find its audience. The Teaching a Robot to Love team also released a video game set in the universe of the musical, which can be played at game.teachingarobottolove.com.
